Kano Market
Kano is the only business city in Nigeria where six digit transaction has to wait for the sun to come up in its full glory before it can get through. If it rains a day before a weekend, it may take a whole afternoon for one to be able to push a market transaction. 😁
Reason I appreciate those young, vibrant, upcoming Kano business guys that are into online marketing. Those guys are making remarkable efforts to change that lackadaisical business attitude.
The real gist.
Yesterday i woke up late and it was my last day in Kano. I woke late because, I slept late, after I spent part of the night reading a collection of stories by some expatriates, called, "Nigerian Gems", my greatest possession this week out of Kano. As I was packing my bag with clothes scathered everywhere in the room I had a quick glance at my phone which showed the time as displayed on my screen to be, 7: 30am. I instantly felt this adrenalin rush, with so much speed I began hurling stuff into my box, all in a rush to pack fast, to avoid missing my flight since I had to run an errand for one of my clients on my way to the airport. I was in Kano for my best friend's wedding and I'd been one of the wedding planners (was the chief bridesmaid 🤗💃), so Kano was exhaustedly hectic and no time to arrange things or fold clothes as I removed them. I just flung everything anywhere and, now is time to pack things. As I was packing, just outside the room was another loads of 'tsaraba' of 'yaji', 'man shanu', and 'buhun tattasai' from my grandma and my uncle for me to deliver to mama in Lagos - waiting just by the door to be packed in a separate sack bag.
By 9:30am, I was all set and ready in the car to the market for my client's transaction that won't take up to five minutes to close the deal, before I proceeded to Mallam Aminu Kano Airport for my 11: 30 flight to Lagos. I already told the driver my plans, so we moved straight to the market( Rimi Market). And I
was so engrossed in checking mails from my phone to notice shops on the way still locked with heavy padlocks to warn me of my early market deals in Kano that always resulted to no-deal, (lot of experiences on that, during my few years stay in Kano).
Abruptly, I had the car came to a stop and assumed it was the traffic light.
Until I heard the driver said, "Hajiya mun zo". "Hajiya we are here" As i raised my head to look, I almost said, "No, ba mu iso ba", but for Asibitin Murtala that was just ahead of us to confirmed, yes, we are truly there. I Just sat in the car open mouthed, staring at array of locked shops and had to check my phone again to see the time, and it was exactly 10:02 am. A glorious Monday morning with no shop open for my over Hundred Thousand Naira business transaction. I just chuckled and reminded myself again that this is KANO, CENTER of COMMERCE , where business starts late and ends early.
